Sri Lanka braces for southwest monsoon with warnings issued
Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology forecasted on Sunday that the southwest monsoon is likely to be gradually established across the country during the next few days.
Showers or thundershowers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces as well as in Galle and Matara districts, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the forecast.
According to the forecast, heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa Province as well as in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts.
“General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers,” it said.
The southwest monsoon brings rains mainly in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka between May and September, with flood and landslide warnings often issued during this period.

Italian jeweller Bulgari contributed 1.5 million euros to fix the cracked Spanish Steps, and the renovated steps were unveiled in 2016. Fendi donated 2.2 million euros to repair one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures, the Trevi Fountain.

Odisha train accident: Opposition questions over passenger safety
New Delhi: Expressing shock and grief at the loss of lives in the train accident in Odisha, opposition leaders on Saturday stressed the importance of prioritising the safety of passengers by railways, while there were also demands to fix accountability and for the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The accident involving two passenger trains and a goods train in Odisha’s Balasore district killed at least 288 people and injured more than 1000, in one of the worst railway tragedies in the country.
The Congress said the “horrendous” train accident in Odisha reinforces why safety should always be the foremost priority in the functioning of the rail network and asserted that there are many questions to ask of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Vaishnaw but those can wait as the immediate task was of rescue and relief.
RJD chief and former railway minister Lalu Prasad claimed that sheer negligence has caused the train tragedy and alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre has “destroyed” the railways.
In a video statement, Kharge said it was the time to stay united and pointed out that several state governments have come forward to help out with the rescue efforts in Odisha, including the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government.
“I want to ask the PM and the Railway Minister that it should be found out how this happened and who is responsible. We always talk about safety but still such an incident happened which had not happened in the history of railways.
“But all this can be discussed later as now it is the time to be united and support the central government and for all leaders to come together to help the people and share their grief,” Kharge said.
Several Congress leaders from different states have either already reached or will soon be reaching Balasore, he said and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“We have many questions to ask of the prime minister and the railway minister but those can wait since the immediate task is of rescue and relief,” Kharge said earlier.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the train accident in Odisha is a matter of the greatest anguish.
“It reinforces why SAFETY should always be the foremost priority in the functioning of the rail network. There are many legitimate questions that need to be raised but that should wait till tomorrow,” Ramesh tweeted.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is a former railway minister, flew to the accident site on Saturday afternoon and demanded a proper investigation.
“This is the biggest train accident of this century and a proper investigation must be conducted,” the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief told reporters.
“Something must be behind this. The truth must come out. Why didn’t the anti-collision system work?” Banerjee said
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the accident site and was briefed by Railway Minister Vaishnaw, said no one would be spared and strong action would be taken against those found guilty.
“Instructions have been given to ensure proper and speedy investigation of the tragedy,” Modi said, adding that more focus will be given to the security of rail passengers.
Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale said there were serious questions about the accident that needed to be answered and demanded the railway minister’s resignation.
The shocking train crash in Balasore, Odisha, last night could have been prevented by a functioning anti-collision system, he said and alleged that BJP is more focussed on “Modi’s Vande Bharat PR & photo-ops instead of safety”.
“Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw must resign immediately if he has any conscience or sense of responsibility and shame left in him,” Gokhale said.
The railways have said that “Kavach” – the automatic train protection system – was not available on the route where the accident occurred on Friday evening.
CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya too raised the same question. “Do we no longer have any signalling and safety system in Indian railways? Or will such terrible tragedies become the new normal for rail travel in India? We owe an answer to the victims and to the families who lost their near and dear ones in this mishap,” he said in a tweet.
The CPI and RJD also demanded that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw resign over the incident.
“Government concentrates only on luxury trains. Trains and tracks of common people are neglected. Orissa deaths are the result of it. Rail minister should resign,” CPI MP Binoy Viswam said in a tweet.
RJD chief said Lalu Prasad said,”I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. A high-level inquiry must be ordered to find out the reason behind the accident, and also fix the responsibilities.”
“The government at the Centre has completely destroyed Indian Railways. They are least bothered about the safety of the passengers. It’s sheer negligence on the part of the railway authorities,” he told reporters.
Some Congress leaders also called for Vaishnaw’s resignation.
Tagging a tweet by Vaishnaw on ex-gratia compensation to victims of the accident, Congress’ MP from Odisha Saptagiri Ulaka said, “You should resign first.”
Ask some person to investigate the reason for this mishap and do course corrections, as well as ensure support to the injured, the MP said.
“Avoid such insensitive tweets at times of pain, anger and deep personal loss,” Ulaka said.
The accident highlights the infrastructural deficiencies of the Railways and lapses in passenger safety, Bihar minister and JD(U) leader Sanjay Kumar Jha said, noting that Nitish Kumar had resigned as railway minister in August 1999 taking moral responsibility for the Gasel train
Gurdeep Singh Sappal, co-ordinator in the Congress president’s office, said, “Resignation in such cases is expected not just on moral grounds. Resignation is also a means to ensure that those in power and accountable for the accident do not influence such ‘high-level inquiry’.”
“That’s why the norm is that the officers in the chain of command are suspended and the minister resigns!” he said.
Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi said she was most pained and anguished by the terrible train disaster in Odisha.
“I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to all the bereaved families,” she said in a statement.
Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi on Friday night expressed sadness over the tragedy and urged party workers and leaders to extend all support needed for the rescue efforts.
President of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, JP Nadda, in a tweet said the BJP has decided to postpone all its programmes marking the completion of nine years of its government at the Centre in the wake of the accident.
The Tamil Nadu government cancelled all official programmes including the centenary celebration of former chief minister and Dravidian stalwart M Karunanidhi on Saturday in view of the train tragedy.

MP govt derecognises Ganga Jamuna School following hijab row
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh government has derecognised the registration of Ganga Jamuna Higher Secondary School in Damoh, where a hijab controversy had erupted a couple of days back.
An order in this regard was issued by the district education department on Friday evening.
In its notification, the education department said the decision has been taken on the basis of the findings of a team which carried out an inspection of the school.
During the inspection, several flaws were found in the school, including in potable water, bathrooms for girl students and many more.
“Ganga Jamuna School in Damoh has been found not complying with the norms set by the state education department, and therefore a decision has been taken to derecognise its registration with immediate effect,” read the notification, which, however, did not mention the hijab controversy.
The school landed in a controversy on Tuesday when it pasted on its wall a poster congratulating its board exam toppers.
Using the pictures of the same poster, various right wing outfits, including the VHP and ABVP, alleged that non-Muslim girl students were forced to wear hijab as seen in their pictures.
There were also allegations that the students were made to sing verses penned by Muhammad Iqbal.
Following this, Damoh District Collector Mayank Agrawal constituted a high-powered committee to probe the allegations levelled against the school.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had said, “I came to know about our daughters being forced to come to the school with their heads covered. I want to warn everyone that such acts won’t be tolerated in MP. Only the education policy implemented by the Narendra Modi-led government will be applicable in the state. Any school which teaches anything which isn’t in line with the New Education Policy or forces its girl students to wear a scarf or anything else to cover their head will not be allowed to operate in MP.”

Hyderabad: How a missed call turned love affair ended in tragedy
Hyderabad: An extra-marital affair between a school teacher named Sujatha, 45, and her supposed lover, Rajesh, 25, an engineering student, is suspected to be the reason behind their suicides that transpired over the past week.
D S Chauhan, Rachakonda police commissioner, told media persons that one year ago Rajesh, who was staying in Chaitanyapuri and is a native of Mulugu district, dialled Sujatha’s phone number by mistake and they began speaking. An innocuous call soon turned into a full-fledged love affair.
Both of them soon got acquainted with each other and started chatting on the phone regularly. Sujatha and Rajesh started meeting and got into a relationship. Slowly Sujatha realized that their relationship was a waste as she was married with three grown up children, and Rajesh was just 25 years old.
Rajesh reportedly also felt the same that he was in a relationship with a woman double his age and thought it was useless too.
“Assuming there is no solution to their problem, both decided to end their lives. On May 24, Sujatha and Rajesh went to a fertilizer shop and purchased one bottle of pesticide from there. On 25 May, Sujatha sent a message on whatsapp to Rajesh telling she was ending her life and consumed it. Family shifted her to hospital and she passed away,” said D S Chauhan.
Rajesh tried to contact Sujatha on phone and when calls went unanswered he went to the residence of Sujatha at Hayathnagar and enquired about her. Srivani, daughter of Sujatha, got suspicious and informed his brother Jaswanth and other two friends.
“The trio caught hold of Rajesh at Kuntloor Hayathnagar and on checking his mobile phone found he was the person who was chatting with their person and she sent a message to him before taking poison,” said the Commissioner.
Jaswanth and others warned Rajesh and left the place. “Rajesh went to a pesticide shop and purchased a bottle of pesticide and liquor. Afterwards, he is suspected to have consumed the pesticide and died. His body was found on 29 May,” said the officer.
The police registered a case of murder initially after noticing the body was naked. After a preliminary autopsy report the police came to know it was a case of consuming poison.

Watch: Saudi astronauts land safely on Earth
The two Saudi astronauts arrived on Earth on Wednesday morning after completing a successful eight-day AX-2 mission on the International Space Station (ISS).
Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali Al Qarni made history as the first Saudi citizens to go on a mission to the orbiting outpost.
Thirty-three-old Barnawi has also become the first Arab woman to go to space.
The SpaceX Dragon capsule, which was carrying two Saudi astronauts and two American astronauts, made a parachute-assisted splashdown off the coast of Florida at 7:04 a.m. GST.
The AX,2 crew, which also included Americans, Peggy Whitson and John Shoffner.
In a series of tweets, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) published a number of videos of the successful landing of the “Dragon” spacecraft after a 12-hour flight from the ISS.
They carried out several science experiments during their time on the ISS, including ones focused on life sciences and weather technology.
On Tuesday, Al Al Qarni tweeted, “Thank you @Space_Station team for your hospitality, and hopefully we will come again with more scientific experiments.”
“Every story comes to an end, and this is only the beginning of a new era for our country and our region.. thanks to everyone who have helped us,” Barnawi tweeted.
The two Saudi astronauts were launched into space towards the International Station on Sunday, May 21, from Launch Complex “39A” at the Kennedy Space Center of the American Space Agency “NASA”, on a journey that took about 15 hours.
This is the first flight that Saudi Arabia has undertaken into space since 1985, when Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, the first Arab Muslim astronaut, made it.

Punjab Cabinet reshuffle in offing with minister submitting resignation
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday forwaded the resignation of Local Government Minister Inderbir Singh Nijjer from the Council of Ministers to Governor Banwari Lal Purohit for early acceptance.
Disclosing this here, a spokesperson for the Chief Minister’s Office said that in a communique to the Governor, Mann has impressed upon him to accept the resignation of Nijjer, who has resigned from the Cabinet on personal grounds.
The Chief Minister has also proposed the names of Kartarpur MLA Balkar Singh and Lambi MLA Gurmeet Singh Khudian for their induction as Cabinet ministers.
Mann has requested the Governor to accord approval to administer oath of office to the new ministers at 11 a.m. on May 31 at the Punjab Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

Adhir lashes out at TMC for luring his party MLA
Kolkata: Congress’ West Bengal president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday hit out at party MLA from Sagardighi Bayron Biswas for joining the TMC saying that the party had decided to give him the ticket because they had faith in his honesty.
Stating that Biswas’ desertion would not have much impact on the party, Chowdhury rubbished his former party colleague’s allegation that he was “unable to work being with the party”.
“I am seeing this (Bayron joining TMC) … I never had a bad impression of Bayron. I would ask Bayron bhai not to label allegations against Congress… If we had not been there with you, you would not be what you are today,” Chowdhury said.
The Congress leader went on to blame the TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee for luring MLAs from other parties.
“Sagardighi proved that Mamata Banerjee is not invincible. She and her party can be beaten. I will say that you will be the one to suffer the most from the game (of taking in deserters from other parties you started… The whole of India knows that Didi is good at breaking a team.
“But, Didi, do not forget, what goes around, comes around,” he said.
The Congress leader also alleged that Mamata Banerjee “is not willing to accept the people’s verdict which gave Congress a victory in Sagardighi… and hence did everything possible to break our MLA.”

Google rolls out Magic Compose beta that uses AI to write messages
San Francisco: Google has started to roll out the beta version of the ‘Magic Compose‘ feature, which uses AI (artificial intelligence) to help users write text messages.
While in beta, this feature is currently limited to users 18 years and older in English on Android phones in the US.
With this feature, Google intends to bring the power of its AI chatbot Bard to its messaging app, boosting users texting efforts, reports Android Police.
According to Google’s support page, Magic Compose appears to be limited to RCS conversations in the Messages app.
Users who have access to this feature will need to enable it from the app’s Settings menu.
By tapping the pencil icon next to typed text, users will be able to use Magic Compose’s suggestions to start a chat or rewrite their message in different tones and styles.
Magic Compose currently supports seven styles — Remix, Excited, Chill, Shakespeare, Lyrical, Formal, and Short.
However, the feature comes with a significant cation as it will send up to “20 previous messages” to Google’s servers in order to generate suggestions even if you use RCS with end-to-end encryption (E2EE).
These messages are then discarded, with Google not storing any data or using it for training its AI models.
“Up to 20 previous messages, including emojis, reactions, and URLs, are sent to Google’s servers and only used to make suggestions relevant to your conversation,” Google mentioned.

HDFC launches fixed deposit schemes offering higher interest rates
HDFC Bank has launched two special fixed deposit (FD) schemes offering interest rates of 7.20% for a 35-month term and 7.25% for a 55-month term. Senior citizens will get 50 basis points more. The bank is offering 7% on deposits maturing between 18 months and 10 years.
As deposit rates are close to the peak and most banks offering 7% or more on retail domestic deposits on select tenures, investors should lock in at higher interest rates and select the tenure based on their investment horizon.
As diversification lowers the risk to your investments, experts say the FD portfolio should be spread across banks and various maturities.
Gaurav Aggarwal, senior director, Paisabazaar, says many macro-economic indicators and G-Sec bond yields are hinting at the peaking of interest rates. “These make it the right time to start booking FD tenures offering higher interest rates, especially if those are offered for longer tenures.”
While investing in special deposit schemes, individuals must factor in their investment horizons as premature withdrawal of fixed deposits usually incur penal rates and sub-optimal returns. They must also check payout options and compounding frequency.
Adhil Shetty, CEO, Bankbazaar, says as the special tenors offered by HDFC Bank are 35 months and 55 months. Depositors who expect to have a liquidity need at the end of these intervals can make full use of these rates. “When we are in a situation such as this where interest rates are peaking, the depositor faces a reinvestment risk. So, if you are looking for higher rates for longer periods, you may have to go for regular tenors that may be longer but offer a slightly lower rate,” he says.
Investors must also compare the fixed deposit rates offered by other scheduled banks as many small finance banks are offering FD yields of 8% and above. As these banks have also been classified as scheduled banks by the RBI, each depositor of these banks is covered under the deposit insurance for cumulative deposits of up to Rs 5 lakh.

PM Modi meets CMs of BJP-ruled states; 2024 LS polls discussed
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a meeting with the chief ministers and deputy CMs of the BJP-ruled states in the national capital during which several issues, including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were discussed.
The meeting was held in the BJP headquarters here, after the inauguration of the new Parliament building. BJP President J.P. Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with several senior party leaders were present at the meeting.
Taking to Twitter after the meeting, PM Modi wrote: “Had a constructive meeting with BJP CMs and Deputy CMs today. We discussed ways for accelerating development and ensuring the welfare of our citizens. They shared their valuable insights during the meeting as well.”
Nadda also shared some photographs from the meeting on Twitter.
It has been learnt that PM Modi held discussions with the CMs and deputy CMs regarding the preparations for next year’s general election.
In the meeting, PM Modi also spoke about the new Parliament, and the directions it would give to the country.
The chief ministers during the meeting apprised Prime Minister Modi about the important schemes and developmental work undertaken in their states.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Tripura CM Manik Saha, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar were present in the meeting.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and two Deputy Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak were also present at the meeting.
Besides, BJP national general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santhosh, the party’s national general secretary Sunil Bansal and other senior leaders of the party also attended the key meeting.
On the occasion of completion of nine years of PM Modi-led government at the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned special public relation campaigns across the country from May 30 to June 30.
As part of the campaign, PM Modi is scheduled to hold rallies in many states.
The Prime Minister Modi is expected to address a public meeting at Ajmer in Rajasthan on May 31.

Deliciously Dilli: Reviving the rich, rustic and robust flavours of ‘Dehlnavi’ cuisine
Some of the travel tales of Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta, who visited Delhi in the 14th century, find relevance even today. For instance, the rose water sherbet served before meals during that time is today known as the ‘Mohabbat ka Sharbat’, a rose syrup cold watermelon milk, on the streets of old Delhi. Pounded millets made into porridge with buffalo milk, consumed by Indians then, are being popularised today as the future of food, at a time when the nation celebrates the ‘International Year of Millets’.
As they say, our past is the window to the future. Delhi has rightly been known to imbibe a diversity of cultural influences from the past to find its very own cuisine: the Dehlnavi. The word ‘Dehlnavi’ or ‘Dehlvi’, which means one from Delhi, is a melting pot of the rich culinary fares across the world. The cuisine comes from the fascinating culinary history of one of the important political centres of India and also the capital of several empires.
Each culture has contributed and left an indelible impression in shaping the Dehlnavi cuisine. From Emperor Akbar getting hundreds of cooks from Persia to the khichdi going through changes in his royal kitchen, a cluster of migrations including Marwari traders in the 19th and 20th centuries, or the post-1947 refugee Punjabi resettlement bringing butter chicken and kunni dal (dal cooked in a big earthen pot called a kunni), the vibrant food trail of Shahjahanabad, now called Purani Dilli, has a confluence of flavours and ingredients from the Kayastha, Baniya, Muslim and Jain communities living in the ‘walled city’.
“There were many recorded evidences and memoirs of poet Hazrat Amir Khusrau and Ibn Battuta about Dilli and its cuisine from homes, but the Mughals bought some refinement in their spread with its Persian nuances tempered with Indian flavours,” shared the late author and storyteller, Sadia Dehlvi, when she hosted the ‘Delhi Tablespread’ of the city’s authentic cuisines at Sheraton New Delhi, Saket, in 2017. Dehlvi’s family was the earliest settlers of Delhi, and she spent considerable time in old Delhi and at her family’s ancestral home, Shama Kothi, in central Delhi.
Red chillies find a purposeful mention in Dehlnavi cuisine. It is believed that the Portuguese brought red chillies to India, who began its cultivation in Goa in the 16th century. Two hundred years later, red chillies made their way to Delhi. During the 18th century, many people had fallen sick due to the polluted canal and the food prepared with that water. The hakims, who lived in the old city, advised using chillies in preparing chaats: paani ke bataashe, papri, chaat pakodi, qalmi badey, samosa and kachori, which were made with all the spices and chillies that would boost digestion and immunity without compromising on taste, wrote Dehlvi in her book Jasmine & Jinns—Memories and Recipes of my Delhi, a treatise on Indian cuisine.
Dehlnavi cuisine has been in a constant state of flux and is as diverse as what we see in many households today. But filmmaker, writer, and heritage buff Sohail Hashmi, who organises heritage walks in Delhi, says that there was no mention of garlic and turmeric in the Mughal cuisine.
“Food was cooked in slow flame, using firewood in brass vessels. Luckily, slow food cooking is making a comeback now. There was no paneer and mushroom until 1947 and these came with the arrival of Punjabis, Multanis and Sindhis. Native Aseel (Indian breed of game chicken) was cooked as chicken and not the white leg horn or the table bird which was more of a delicacy in Europe and England and became popular in Delhi post independence. Portuguese never ate chillies but decorated it as a plant because of its colourful fruit,” says Hashmi.
But Delhi gave garam masala to the world, says Manisha Bhasin, corporate executive chef, ITC Hotels, who has been at the helm of researching the concept of community cuisine, especially Dehlnavi, now for a decade, before bringing the dishes on to the plates of food connoisseurs.
“Spices such as cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon and peppercorns have garam taseer (a warming effect) and here people are particular about taseer, the effect of food on the body. In Dehlnavi cuisine, you will find a ubiquitous use of spices. It’s a no-fuss cuisine, more rustic, robust in flavour. While researching I gathered interest in local ingredients and the value they add to the cuisine, and that’s how my journey to explore our home cuisines and production began,” shares Bhasin, who introduced Dehlnavi cuisine under an umbrella concept first in 2005 in a food festival in New Delhi, and is back with a multi-city festival in ITC Hotels starting from May till September this year.
“We have brought the communities under a larger umbrella and not just in spurts. All the migrated communities who came and made Delhi their home have a culinary heritage and the city is a mix of all those royal recipes from the shahi kitchens, and the street food or the family recipes. All these are clubbed together to preserve the Dehlnavi which offers the Muslim, Kayastha, Vaish, Baniya and Punjabi food,” says Bhasin.
Over 200 dishes in this year’s festival offer a host of Dehlnavi interpretations. There is UP-style mirchi nimona pulao (basmati rice preparation enriched with whole gentle green chillies stuffed with a peas paste); meha bharwan (stuffed Indian round gourd cooked in light tomato and asafoetida gravy), inspired from Kayasthas’ gol kata tinda; dal dehlnavi (a combination of moth and split yellow lentils cooked on low heat garnished with pickled ginger julienne, green chilli and roasted cumin, served with crisp biscotti roti); bhe ke kebab (small cakes of lotus stem and potatoes flavoured with garam masala and pan-grilled to perfection); butter chicken and nehari (prime cuts of lamb cooked in brown onion and saffron gravy), and in desserts, baraf ki handi (reduced milk scented with crushed almonds and cardamom, served with frozen motiya zarda), khurchan (scrapings of milk made by heating milk in shallow pan and scraped off with sugar and rose water).
So, is Dehlnavi more about survival rather than sophistication? It’s a combination of both, says Bhasin. There is much refinement in the cuisine and its rediscovery has only upped the presentation. For a silbatte ka shammi (hand pounded meat kebab pan seared on a griddle, flavoured with Indian spices) Bhasin uses raan ka keema (leg of goat/lamb) to make it finer and mild.
However, Dilli’s historical cuisine has been reduced to kebabs, rogan josh or biryani unfortunately and Hashmi feels there is a need to revive dishes that have fallen off the map. “Do you think the Mughals ate korma every day? No. Today, kormas, stews find equal importance in the homes of Dilliwallahs and communities of the old city as gravies or seasonal salans cooked with vegetables (tinda, karela, lauki, kaddu, torai), and these are very much part of a traditional, non-vegetarian fare,” says Hashmi.
Talking about how there will always be a place for traditions, Bhasin feels the new generation is widely accepting the traditional past, is more aware and wants to stick to their roots. “Such cuisines offer a vintage trend with a twist. These recipes are time-tested and have survived over 100 years. People are rediscovering their roots and the younger generation is at the forefront,” she says.

Thiyam seeks religious leaders’ proactive role to restore peace
Imphal: As tension and anxiety continued gripping the ethnic violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur, eminent theatre personality Ratan Thiyam has appealed to the religious leaders of the state to take up a proactive role in restoring peace and stability.
Thiyam, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winner in 1987, said that considering the grave situation that Manipur is currently facing, all religious leaders from temples, mosques and churches should try to find means to restore peace.
“I urge them to help the government in bringing both the parties of the conflict to the negotiating table,” he said.
The theatre legend in a statement further appealed to the state government at the Centre to show their genuine commitment and empathy during this time of crisis in Manipur.
He said: “It is my earnest request to the Centre to continuously send different Ministers one after another to study the situation and understand the ground reality.”
A former Chairperson of the National School of Drama (from 2013-2017), Thiyam, 75, further said that common people are facing different hardships, and they are immensely affected by price rises and scarcity of essential commodities.
At such a critical juncture, all the learned experts of the government should do their best to find a way out of the present crisis, he observed.
The internationally acclaimed theatre personality also appealed to all the ministers and MLAs to jointly visit the affected places and listen to the grievances of the people.
Stating that the current situation arises from a discord between two communities, Thiyam, who is one of the leading figures of the “theatre of roots” movement in Indian theatre, appealed to both sides to calm down and come to the negotiating table.
“The possibility of such an arrangement should be seriously looked upon by the state government,” he said.
Expressing his disappointment over the weakness of the intelligence network of the state, he said: “Had the Intelligence been alerted about the violence in time, the present situation could have been avoided.”
Thiyam further made his appeal to all the people of Manipur, who belong to the 34-35 plus communities and who have been living together as brothers for the last hundreds and thousands of years, to “intervene in this critical scenario in Manipur’s history to find a solution to bring peace again”.
He added that the clash occurred due to a misunderstanding between just two communities, and both sides will surely listen and act when the rest of the communities intervene.
Earlier, Olympic medal-winning boxer and Rajya Sabha member Mary Kom appealed to the people of Manipur to maintain peace and harmony and restore normalcy.
