Indian Navy aids search as Chinese fishing vessel sinks in Indian Ocean
New Delhi: The Indian Navy deployed its P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to help in the search and rescue of a Chinese fishing vessel with 39 crew members that capsized in the Indian Ocean two days ago.
The P8I aircraft carried out multiple and extensive searches on Wednesday despite adverse weather and located multiple objects possibly belonging to the sunken vessel, the Navy said.
The Chinese vessel ‘Lu Peng Yuan Yu 028’ overturned on Tuesday in the central part of the Indian Ocean.
“In a swift humanitarian action on May 17, Indian Navy deployed its air maritime reconnaissance assets in the Southern Indian Ocean region approximately 900 nautical miles from India, in response to sinking of a Chinese fishing vessel with 39 crew onboard,” the Indian Navy said.
The crew of the vessel includes nationals from China, Indonesia and Philippines.
The Navy said P8I aircraft have carried out multiple and extensive searches despite adverse weather and located multiple objects possibly belonging to the sunken vessel.
“As an immediate response, search and rescue equipment was deployed at the scene by the Indian aircraft on request of PLA(Navy) ships closing the area,” it said.
“In a display of India’s obligations as a credible and responsible partner for ensuring safety at sea, the Indian Navy units also coordinated search and rescue efforts with other units in the area and guided the PLA(Navy) warships transiting to the scene of the incident,” it added.
The Indian Navy’s assistance came amid the lingering border row in eastern Ladakh.
“The Indian Navy continues to remain deployed to provide all possible assistance to the ongoing search and rescue efforts,” the navy said.
Australia has also extended assistance in the search and rescue efforts.
“We hope that surrounding countries will continue to work with China to carry out joint search and rescue and not give up hope of saving lives,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in Beijing.

Siasat hosts solidarity meet for Manipur pogrom victims, survivors
A solidarity meet for the victims and survivors of the Manipur pogrom was held at 5.30- 7.30 pm, Wednesday, 17 May, M J Hall, The Siasat Daily compound, Abids.
The meet was organised by the Telangana Solidarity Forum and Christian organisations. Moderated by Sarah Mathews, prominent speakers such as Bishop Paothang Haokip- Good Shepherd Community Churches. Fr. Raju Alex- Deputy Secretary of Telugu Catholics’ Bishops’ Council, Rev Prashanth Babu- Youth Secretary, Telangana Council of Churches, Dr. Sardar Sajjan Singh- subcommittee member, SGPC, Amritsar, Dr. Kumar- BAMCEF, Advocate M A Shakeel, Robert Surya Prakash- National Council of Baptist Churches, Jasveen Jairath, and other activists spoke about the ground reality of the violence against the minority Christian community of Manipur.
Reflecting the Ganga- Jamuni tehzeeb of Hyderabad, the audience cut across region, religion and caste. The meeting was profound and solemn.
A number of important recommendations were recorded. They are as follows:
- Medical aid is of paramount importance. It should be made available by all possible means.
- Other aid such clothing and other necessities to be collected and sent to Manipur.
- Legal aid on a consistent basis – legal teams to work on the field collecting data and affidavits from people for lost documents and possessions, FIRs to be filed against atrocities committed.
- The National Human Rights and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to be approached for redressal.
- Victims to be assisted in getting government relief.
- Settlement of displaced people.
Advocacy of such issues and a national network for the same are urgently required.
The role of the social media in spreading false propaganda was also discussed.
The forum also passed a resolution:
“We the members of this forum demand that the National Human Rights Commission visits Manipur and renders all necessary support and protects the people of the Kuki community and directs the state to take stern action against the perpetrators. “

Earlier, for Lucknow, Stoinis played a stupendous inning! He smashed eight sixes during the course of the game and shared an 82 run partnership with stand-in skipper Krunal Pandya, who scored 49 and had to retire due to injury.
The situation got worse for Lucknow when Quinton de Kock fell in the seventh over and scored only 16 runs off 15 balls. De Kock went for the drive off a googly from the wily Piyush Chawla but ended up getting caught behind. Mumbai leaked 54 runs in the last three overs.

Bengaluru violence: HC rejects petition by accused seeking quashing of charge sheet
Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rejected a petition by the accused in the infamous DJ Halli-KG Halli violence in Bengaluru in August 2020, seeking quashing of charge sheet against them.
A bench, headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, rejected the petition submitted by accused Mohammad Khaleel Ahmad and others in the violence case which rocked Bengaluru on August 11, 2020.
The accused also sought to quash the investigation by the Special NIA (National Investigation Agency) court. The petition maintained that the statements recorded by the CCB and the NIA are different. It also alleged that the investigation by NIA is just for the sake of it.
The bench opined that if the allegations are true, the investigation is very much needed. At this stage, the court can’t investigate witnesses. If allegations are made that investigation is not proper, it can’t be concluded that the investigation is inappropriate, it held.
Counsel for accused maintained that the NIA slueths have concealed certain matters and conducted the investigation. As a result, there is no opportunity for the accused to prove their innocence.
It was also submitted that the act of accused only attract IPC sections and do not attract the UAPA and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and hence the charges must be dropped, counsel submitted.
NIA counsel had submitted that the petitioner had approached the High Court, though the jurisdiction lies with NIA Special court. The charge sheet is going to prove the involvement of accused in offences under the UAPA act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. It was also submitted that at least four persons had lost their lives in the incident.

Pak officer in touch with DRDO scientist had also contacted IAF corporal: Maha ATS
Mumbai: A Pakistan Intelligence Officer, allegedly in touch with DRDO scientist Pradeep Kurulkar arrested on charges of leaking confidential information after he was apparently honey-trapped, had also contacted an Indian Air Force employee of corporal rank, a Maharashtra ATS official said on Tuesday.
He said the state Anti-Terrorism Squad was examining whether this has any connection with the Kurulkar case.
The ATS has identified the IAF official based in the Bengaluru unit and his statement was recorded. He will be made a witness in the case, the ATS official said.
Prima facie, the Internet Protocol (IP) address used by the PIO to contact the IAF employee was the same which was used to contact Kurulkar.
Kurulkar, a director at one of the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) labs in Pune, was arrested by the ATS on May 3.
A special court in Pune on Tuesday remanded Kurulkar in judicial custody till May 29, following which he was shifted to Yerawada Central Prison, officials said.
On Monday, the special court extended his police custody till Tuesday after the prosecution said his mobile phone needs to be analysed.
The DRDO scientist was allegedly in touch with an agent of a “Pakistan Intelligence Operative” through WhatsApp and video calls, an ATS official said last week, adding it was a case of honeytrap.
After his arrest, an offence under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act was registered against the DRDO scientist.
The prosecution earlier informed the court that they had seized a phone on which a PIO (Person of Indian Origin) agent had messaged Kurulkar using an Indian number.
Kurulkar had allegedly travelled to five to six countries on a diplomatic passport and the prosecution wanted to know whom he met during those trips.

Maha communal violence: Situation in Akola, Shevgaon under control; 132 detained
Akola: Communal violence in Akola city and Shevgaon village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra in the last two days has posed a challenge to police to prevent potential flare-ups in other areas, while 132 people have been detained so far after the clashes left one person dead and 13 others injured, including two policemen.
While state minister Girish Mahajan, who belongs to BJP, claimed that the violence in Akola was possibly “pre-planned”, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said there are some organisations and people who want the state to be unstable, but the government will teach them a lesson.
One person was killed and eight others, including two policemen, were injured, in a clash that broke out on Saturday night in the sensitive Old City area of Akola over a religious post on social media, prompting the police to clamp curfew in some pockets, police had said.
Members of the two groups hurled stones at each other and indulged in large-scale vandalism. The rioters set on fire some two-wheelers and four-wheelers during the violence.
In Shevgaon village in Ahmednagar district in west Maharashtra, at least five persons were injured in a clash over a procession on Sunday night. Several shops and vehicles were damaged in stone pelting, police said on Monday.
Police have detained 132 people- more than 100 in Akola and 32 in Shevgaon- so far. Cases were registered against 150 people in Shevgaon, located 65 km from the Ahmednagar district headquarters, an official said.
After the violence in Akola, District Magistrate Nima Arora ordered a curfew, which requires people to stay at home, in four police station areas of the city to maintain law and order, a senior officer said.
On Monday, the official said, the curfew was relaxed in areas under the jurisdiction of City Kotwali and Ramdas Peth police station limits.
However, it will remain in force within the limits of Dabki Road and Old City police stations at night (between 8 pm and 8 am), while some relaxations will be provided during day time, he said.
Internet services remain suspended in Akola and Shevgaon to check the spread of rumours, officials said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday instructed the police to take strict action against those behind the riots in Akola and Shevgaon and appealed to people to maintain peace and social harmony, said his office.
“The situation in Akola and Shevgaon is now under control and the police force is deployed. On the instructions of state home minister Devendra Fadnavis, state rural development minister Girish Mahajan has personally visited Akola while revenue minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil reviewed the situation in Shegaon,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in a statement.
Fadnavis said, “It is 100 per cent true there are some people and organisations that want the state to remain unstable. But the government will expose them and also teach them a lesson”.
Earlier in the day, State Rural Development Minister Girish Mahajan claimed the clash was possibly “pre-planned”. Mahajan visited the affected areas in Akola on Sunday.
“Some houses and vehicles were damaged. Strict action would be taken against the culprits,” he told reporters after meeting the family of the man, Vilas Gaikwad (40), killed in the violence.
Mahajan said the government has announced assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Aurangabad MP Chandrakant Khaire claimed that riots were being instigated in Maharashtra to stop Muslim votes from shifting towards the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
Ever since the Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis coalition has come to power, communal tensions are taking place, Khaire alleged.

Imran Khan likely to appear before Lahore High Court on Monday
Lahore: Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan is likely to appear before the Lahore High Court on Monday in the cases registered against him for torching the house of the Corps Commander here and other incidents of violence erupted after his arrest last week.
Khan returned to his Lahore home on Saturday after having locked himself in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises for hours for fear of re-arrest despite being granted bail on Friday. The IHC had granted 70-year-old Khan bail, barring the authorities from arresting him in all the cases registered beyond May 9 and asked him to approach the Lahore High Court for further relief on May 15.
In the Al Qadir Trust case, in which National Accountability Bureau arrested the former cricketer-turned politician on May 9, the IHC granted him pre-arrest bail for two weeks.
The Supreme Court had declared Khan’s arrest from the IHC premises illegal and referred the matter to the IHC.
“The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman is likely to appear before the LHC to seek pre-arrest bail in six cases registered against him in Lahore and other parts of Punjab province after May 9,” a senior leader from Khan’s party told PTI on Sunday.
He said Khan held a meeting of the party leaders (who still managed to evade arrest) at his Zaman Park residence here and discussed the party’s future strategy. His appearance before the LHC was also discussed.
He said the government and the establishment are desperate to arrest Khan in any frivolous case.
The Punjab police on May 10 booked Khan and hundreds of his party workers for attacking and setting on fire the Corps Commander House in Lahore besides registering five other FIRs against him for inciting his supporters to attack and damage the state buildings and military installations.
Khan and his deputy Shah Mahmood Qureshi and others have been framed under murder, terrorism and 20 other heinous offences for attacking the senior military commander house known as ‘Jinnah House’ in Lahore Cantonment on last Tuesday.
The arrest of Khan on Tuesday by the Pakistan Rangers at the IHC premises triggered unrest in Pakistan that continued till Friday and led to several deaths and dozens of military and state installations being destroyed by the protesters.
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the protesters stormed the army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and also torched the corps commander’s house in Lahore.
Police put the death toll in violent clashes to 10 while Khan’s party claims 40 of its workers lost their lives in the firing by security personnel.
Punjab Inspector General Police Dr Usman Anwar told a press conference on Sunday that over 3,500 people have been arrested in Punjab province for their involvement in violence erupted after Khan’s arrest. He said most of them will be tried in anti-terrorism courts.
Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Adityanath thanks people for forming ‘triple-engine’ govt in UP
Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh and congratulated BJP workers for forming a “triple-engine government” in the state after the party’s “biggest victory” in the urban local body polls.
He said the win was a result of better coordination between the government and the organisation.
Flanked by Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, Adityanath said the BJP has won all the 17 municipal corporations for the first time.
“In all 17 municipal corporations, voters have reposed faith in BJP,” he said.
The chief minister said in the elections conducted in 199 out of the 200 municipal councils, BJP won double the seats won by it in 2017, when it got 60.
The BJP has achieved unprecedented success this time in all nagar panchayats and the party has won more than two-and-a-half times of what it won in 2017, he added.
“The hard work of BJP workers, better coordination between the government and the organisation and the able and successful leadership of the prime minister and under his guidance, the Bharatiya Janata Party achieved its biggest victory in the UP municipal elections so far,” he said.
BJP’s state in-charge Radha Mohan Singh, and Sanjay Nishad of the alliance partner Nishad Party were also present at the press conference.
Earlier in a tweet, the chief minister said, “Hearty congratulations to all the dedicated and hardworking workers of the BJP and the people of Uttar Pradesh, who love good governance, on the massive victory of the BJP in the Uttar Pradesh municipal elections.”
“This massive victory reflects the successful guidance of respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and immense public faith in the pro-people, developmental and all-inclusive policies of the double-engine government,” he added.
The chief minister also congratulated the people on forming a triple-engine government in the state.
Adityanath had led the campaign for the urban local body polls, holding several election meetings across the state. During the campaign, he had repeatedly urged voters to add a third wheel to the double-engine government in Uttar Pradesh.

Will fulfil 5 pre-poll guarantees in first cabinet meeting: Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the incoming government in Karnataka would not only give its stamp of approval for the five pre-poll guarantees announced by the party in the first cabinet meeting itself but also pass an order to this effect immediately.
He also said the mandate given by the people is to give a pro-people administration and not for “enjoyment”.
“The five guarantees we have given will be approved in the first cabinet meeting and we will then pass an order,” the former Chief Minister said addressing a press conference here.
The Congress has promised to implement ‘guarantees’ 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti).
He also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had allegedly mocked these guarantees. “Modi said these promises will not be fulfilled as it will burden the state with debts. Modi himself burdened the country with debts. It is the BJP which has pushed the state towards bankruptcy,” Siddaramaiah said.
The Congress wrested power from the BJP with a comfortable win in the Assembly polls. According to the Election Commission website at 9.30 pm, the party emerged on top in 135 seats and was leading in one seat.

‘We will see tomorrow’, Kharge on BJP’s claims of forming govt with JD-S
Bengaluru: Responding to reports suggesting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding talks with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in Karnataka over forming the government, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said “we will see tomorrow” (May 13).
The results of the Karnataka Assembly election, polling for which was held on May 10, will be announced on Saturday.
Replying to a question by the media here, Kharge said: “Our party has the strategy of discussing things after meeting each other. If we tell you everything, what would remain?”
He quoted a Kannada proverb, saying “it is too soon to talk about the matter”, when asked about who would be the CM candidate from the party.
“First, let the results come. Things will be decided later on,” he said.
Kharge has been camping in the state for almost one month.
His residence has become the centre of hectic party activities after exit polls predicted that “Congress will emerge as the single largest party”.
Earlier on Friday, Kharge held a meeting with senior leaders including state party in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, general secretary K.C. Venugopal, state unit chief D.K. Shivakumar, and former chief minister Siddaramaiah at a hotel in Bengaluru.
According to party sources, Congress leaders discussed the possibilities of the outcome on May 13, and the strategy in case of a hung Assembly.
Shivakumar on Friday claimed that there was a huge wave for his party in the state, while underlining that Kharge and his predecessor Sonia Gandhi will take a decision on the chief ministerial post if the Congress is voted to power.
Speaking about “power sharing” between him and Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar told mediapersons: “The decision of Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is final on this matter.”
He further said: “I don’t have a belief in exit polls. According to me, we will win 141 seats. Our surveys have collected more samples than the exit poll agencies.
“I have gone to every corner. The BJP might have spent money, their big leaders might have campaigned. The vote is more powerful than the bullet. How did the people not fear the British Raj? The same way, they have chosen Congress against the double engine government. They had misused constitutional agencies, indulged in misuse of power,” Shivakumar said.
The Congress leader said “BJP leaders are claiming that they will form the government no matter how many seats they get. It is their illusion”.
The Congress is hoping to return to power in the state by defeating the ruling BJP in the southern state.
The grand old party had campaigned aggressively in the state and had targetted the BJP on several issues.

BOB, IDBI, SBI Capital in race to manage IREDA IPO
Three merchant bankers – BOB Capital, IDBI Capital and SBI Capital – are in the race to manage the initial public offering (IPO) of Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA). Separately, Saraf and Partners, Luthra & Luthra and Crawford Bayley & Company are in the race to act as the legal adviser for the IPO.
The merchant bankers and law firms made their presentations to the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management on Wednesday. The IPO, which is expected in FY24, will likely comprise a 10% stake sale by the government and 15% fresh equity issuance by the renewable energy project financier to fund its business growth.

Listing of unlisted state-owned firms is a priority for the Centre to unlock value in these companies and also improve corporate governance.
On March 17, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the IREDA IPO. This decision superseded the earlier CCEA decision taken in June 2017 to allow IREDA to issue 139 million fresh equity shares of Rs 10 each to the public on a book-building basis through IPO. The instant decision has been necessitated due to a change in capital structure following an infusion of capital to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore by the government in March 2022.
IREDA currently is a wholly owned GoI enterprise incorporated in 1987. It is engaged in financing of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) projects in India.
It is registered as a non-banking financial company with the Reserve Bank of India.

Cong says sovereignty’ word was never used by Sonia Gandhi, deletes ‘erroneous’ tweet
New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday said the word “sovereignty” was never used by former party chief Sonia Gandhi in her campaign speech in Karnataka’s Hubbali and deleted the party’s tweet which had “erroneously” attributed the word to her.
The Congress’ clarification came after the Election Commission on Monday asked AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to clarify and rectify the party’s social media post on Karnataka’s sovereignty remark attributed to Sonia Gandhi.
“The word sovereignty’ was never used by Smt Sonia Gandhi Ji in her speech dated May 6, 2023 at Hubballi, Karnataka. Since this has been erroneously reported – it is being deleted,” the Congress said in a tweet Wednesday.
The Congress shared a screenshot of Sonia Gandhi’s speech in Hindi on its Twitter handle as well as a YouTube video link of the speech.
A row had erupted over the remark with the BJP on Monday moving the Election Commission seeking an FIR against Sonia Gandhi and her party’s derecognition. The poll panel had asked the Congress to clarify and rectify the party’s social media post.
After Gandhi addressed a campaign rally in Hubballi in Karnataka on Saturday, the Congress tweeted from its official handle: “CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: ‘The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity’.”
The tweet has now been deleted.
The EC letter to Kharge had come following a complaint by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In its complaint, the BJP alleged, “Karnataka is a very important member state in the union of India and any call to protect the sovereignty of a member state of the Union of India amounts to a call for secession and is fraught with perilous & pernicious consequences.
A former Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi is currently the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP had attacked the Congress over the issue.

Damage to Indian High Commission in London was not okay: UK High Commissioner
New Delhi: British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis on Wednesday said the damage to the Indian High Commission in London was “not okay” and that he would have been “equally angry” if a similar incident took place at a UK mission.
“I completely understand the anger here about what happened… that was a completely unforewarned small group of people doing some damage to the High Commission. I would have been equally angry if it would have happened to our high commission,” he said addressing an event organised by the Ananta Centre here.
Ellis was referring to the vandalism at the Indian High Commission in London in March this year by pro-Khalistan groups who pulled down the tricolour and damaged the mission.
He further said that India and the United Kingdom (UK) were capable of dealing with disagreements, but in case of Khalistani extremism, “there was no disagreement”.
“In case of extremism, in specific Khalistani extremism, I think there is no disagreement. What happened at the Indian High Commission was absolutely not okay. It is a symptom of an issue which is Khalistani extremism,” he said.
“We look at extremism not in relationship with a particular group of people, but overall extremism is a risk in any country. It certainly is a risk in mine,” Ellis said.
The High Commissioner noted that the UK government had a “toolkit” for dealing with disinformation and radicalisation at religious institutions.
At the same time, Ellis said it was necessary to keep “eyes on the prize” of closer India-UK strategic relationship.
He also spoke about clinching the bilateral Free Trade Agreement soon before the two countries move into their respective election cycles in 2024 and 2025.
