BJP submits application to Nagpur cops, seeks action against Uddhav over ‘taint’ jibe

Nagpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s legal cell here on Tuesday submitted an application to the police in Nagpur seeking action against Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray over his “taint” jibe directed at Maharashtra deputy CM and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis.

Addressing his party workers in Nagpur, the home turf of Fadnavis, Thackeray on Monday said the BJP leader was a “taint” on the city as he had aligned with the NCP (Ajit Pawar group) despite asserting that he would never do so.

The former CM said Fadnavis, his one-time ally, had “betrayed” the people of Nagpur by joining hands with a section of the Sharad Pawar-founded party.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar and eight other party MLAs joined the Eknath Shinde-Fadnavis government on July 2.

BJP Vidhi Agadhi (legal cell) members led by its local unit president Parikshit Mohite submitted the application to inspector Atul Sabnis at the Sitabuldi police station. Their application sought action against Thackeray for making “baseless and inflammatory remarks that could trigger law and order situation in the state”.

A police official confirmed receiving the application, but did not make further comments.

Lambani artisans set Guinness World Record

Hampi: In a resounding triumph of cultural creativity, women of the nomadic Lambani community of Hampi in Karnataka have set a new Guinness World Record for producing the highest number of embroidery patches.

At the G20 Culture Working Group meeting held here, around 450 Lambani artisans showcased their exceptional skills and craftsmanship by creating an astounding collection of over 1,755 unique patches.

Lambani embroidery is a vibrant and intricate form of textile embellishment characterised by colourful threads, mirror work, and a rich array of stitch patterns. It is practised in several villages of Karnataka such as Sandur, Keri Tanda, Mariyammanahalli, Kadirampur, Sitaram Tanda, Bijapur, and Kamalapur.

This initiative is congruent with the third priority of the CWG, ‘Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries and Creative Economy’, as it spotlights the rich artistic tradition of Lambani embroidery, thereby promoting the creative economy of Karnataka and India.

This remarkable achievement has not only brought immense pride to the Lambani artisans, but also given a sense of empowerment and recognition to the community, Lily Pandeya, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture said.

In the midst of the G20 delegates, the Lambani artisans shared their sentiments on this historic accomplishment and its impact on their lives and empowerment.

Shanta Bai, a seasoned Lambani artisan, expressed her joy, saying, “We are overjoyed and honoured to have set a Guinness World Record. This achievement means the world to us as it showcases our talent and cultural heritage to the global community. We hope that this recognition will bring more opportunities for our community and help us uplift our standard of living.”

The G20 delegates’ presence provided a platform to showcase the immense talent and creativity of the Lambani artisans, enabling them to make meaningful connections and forge partnerships that can further empower their community.

“Their exceptional talent and craftsmanship demonstrate the power of cultural diversity and the invaluable contributions of marginalised communities. This accomplishment serves as an inspiration for all G20 delegates to further promote and support cultural empowerment initiatives worldwide,” said a delegate from France.

This Guinness World Record not only celebrates the Lambani artisans’ exceptional talent, but also paves the way for sustainable livelihoods and cultural preservation, another delegate said.

As the G20 Culture Working Group meeting continues, the Lambani artisans’ achievement stands as an inspiring example of cultural diversity and resilience within the G20 community.

Through initiatives that empower marginalised communities, the Lambani artisans are hopeful that their accomplishments will inspire other communities and individuals to appreciate and preserve their own cultural heritage.

“We are hopeful that our achievements will serve as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging other communities and individuals to cherish and preserve their own unique cultural heritage. Through our record-setting accomplishment, we hope to ignite a sense of pride and appreciation for traditional arts and crafts, fostering a deeper connection to our diverse cultural identities,” Shakuntala, a Lambani artisan, told PTI.

The Lambani artisans’ triumph in setting the Guinness World Record for embroidery patches signifies a significant milestone in their journey towards empowerment and recognition. Their exceptional skills, showcased amidst the G20 delegates, have not only cemented their place in history but have also opened doors for economic and cultural growth.

“This remarkable achievement serves as a testament to the Lambani artisans’ unwavering dedication, and preserving their vibrant cultural legacy for generations to come,” a delegate from Italy added.

AAP counters ED claims says Sisodias properties worth Rs 16L only attached

New Delhi: Hours after the Enforcement Directorate claimed that it has attached properties to the tune of Rs 52.24 crore of AAP leader Manish Sisodia and his wife and others in the now scrapped excise policy money laundering case, the AAP countered the claims, saying that of the total attachment by the financial probe agency comprises only properties worth Rs 16 lakh belonging to the former Deputy Chief Minister.

In a tweet from its official handle, the AAP said: “Another shameful lie of Modi’s ED. Of the total assets attached by ED today only a bank account containing Rs 11 lakh and a flat of the value of Rs 5 lakh of Sisodia have been attached.

“The assets belonging to Sisodia is total upto the value of Rs 16 lakh only.”

The AAP said that the flat of Sisodia in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad was bought in 2005 and it is valued at Rs 5.07 lakh, while the flat of his wife Seema Sisodia in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area is worth Rs 65 lakh and was bought in 2018.

It also said that both these flats were bought before the year 2018 when the excise policy was not even mentioned anywhere.

The strong rebuttal from the AAP came after the ED claimed that it attached properties worth Rs 52.24 crore of Sisodia, his wife, Amandeep Singh Dhall, Rajesh Joshi, Gautam Malhotra and others in connection with the case.

The ED said that the attached assets worth Rs 52.24 crore include immovable properties worth Rs. 7.29 crore — two immovable properties of Sisodia and his wife Seema Sisodia, land or flat of Joshi or Chariot Productions Media Pvt Ltd. and land or flat of Malhotra.

The financial probe agency said that the attachment also includes movable assets worth Rs 44.29 crore including bank balances of Sisodia worth Rs 11.49 lakhs, Brindco Sales Pvt Ltd worth Rs 16.45 crore and others.

The ED has arrested 12 persons so far and has filed five charge sheets. The ED case of money laundering is based on the CBI FIR filed against Sisodia and others on August 17 last year. The CBI arrested Sisodia on February 26 this year and the ED arrested him later on March 9. Sisodia is currently in judicial custody.

Congress CPI(M) accuse each other of having no clear stand on Uniform Civil Code

Thiruvananthapuram: The verbal duel between the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala and the opposition Congress over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) got heated on Thursday with each accusing the other of not having a clear stand on the issue.

During the day, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief and MP K Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly V D Satheesan attacked the Left party by saying it was “opportunistic” and was trying to gain politically from the issue.

The Congress leaders also said that if the CPI(M) was sincerely opposed to the UCC, it should reject the stand taken by its former leader and first Kerala CM E M S Namboodiripad who had called for a common personal law for all citizens.

In the face of these allegations, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hit back at the Congress, questioning its stance on the issue.

“Does the @INCIndia have a clear stand on the #UniformCivilCode? Their suspicious silence is deceitful. When it is the need of the hour to resist the Sangh Parivar’s attacks on India’s plurality, is the INC ready to take a firm stand against them,” he asked in a tweet.

Additionally, in a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Vijayan said that instead of clearly articulating their position on issues like the UCC, the Congress was “resorting to its tried-and-true tactic” of throwing insults at the CPI(M).

“Does the Congress have a clear position and policy on it at the national level? If so, what is it?

“Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh, who is also a Minister in the Himachal Pradesh cabinet, has welcomed the Uniform Civil Code. Is that the official stand of the Congress,” the CM asked.

This query was also raised by reporters during a press conference held in Thiruvananthapuram by Sudhakaran, to which the KPCC chief replied that the stand taken by the national leadership was the correct one.

He said that the party would decide what has to be done with regard to those indicating a stand contrary to that of the national leadership on the UCC issue.

Sudhakaran also said that the Congress was strongly opposing the UCC and would be holding public events at Kozhikode, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram to oppose the Uniform Civil Code.

He said that if the UCC is implemented, it would destroy the nation as the unity among the people would be lost.

The KPCC chief alleged that the BJP only wants to divide the people through the UCC and the CPI(M) in Kerala was doing the same by turning it into a Muslim only issue and trying to “create communal polarisation” in the state.

“The CPI(M) is opportunistic. They are trying to make political gains out of it,” he further alleged.

Satheesan too spoke along similar lines at Kozhikode where he alleged that the CPI(M) was coming out with the same “communal agenda” as the BJP.

He also said that the Congress, right from the beginning, had clearly stated that it was opposed to the UCC and there has been no change in that stand.

Satheesan challenged the CPI(M) and its state secretary M V Govindan to openly reject the stand taken by Namboodiripad on the UCC decades ago.

Later in the day, Vijayan came out with his statement and tweet hitting back at the Congress.

He said that apart from opposing the BJP in electoral politics, the Congress “was reluctant to stand against the Sangh Parivar on issues affecting the integrity of our country”.

“In effect, the Congress is supporting the anti-democratic ordinance brought by the Centre to overturn the Supreme Court’s verdict favouring the Delhi state government.

“This ordinance makes clear that the Sangh Parivar is willing to subvert constitutional principles to push its vested interests,” the Kerala CM said.

He also alleged that the Delhi and Punjab state units of the Congress decided to stand against the Delhi state government.

Even the grand old party’s national leadership too has not taken a stance in support of the Aam Aadmi Party’s government in Delhi, he claimed.

“The Congress is having this same dishonest stance on the UCC,” Vijayan contended.

A political debate was kicked off in the state over the UCC after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last week, made a strong push for implementing the UCC by asking how the country can function with dual laws that govern personal matters.

He had advocated for the UCC while addressing BJP workers in Bhopal in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh.

AAP takes to streets burn effigies of Centres ordinance

AAP takes to streets, burn effigies of Centre's ordinance

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday organised protest rallies at multiple locations here and burnt effigies of the Central government’s ordinance on control of services in the national capital.

“From July 6 to July 13, effigies and copies of the black ordinance will be burnt at various locations across Delhi, which will serve as a powerful reminder of people’s discontent,” AAP said.

The AAP said that the significant turnout of Delhi residents for the protest rallies clearly conveyed their demand for the withdrawal of the ‘oppressive’ ordinance, which infringes upon the constitutional rights of the elected government.

The public firmly believes that the ‘black’ ordinance undermines the best interests of Delhi, AAP said.

“It is important to note that a previous Supreme Court order granted the elected government of Delhi the authority over services, including the transfer and posting of officers. The court recognised that denying a government control over its officers would hinder effective governance, contradicting the intentions of the Constitution makers. Thus, the court ruled that the Arvind Kejriwal government should have legislative and executive power over services necessary for the region’s administration,” AAP said.

However, a week later, the Centre disregarded the Supreme Court’s decision and overturned it by introducing the ‘black’ ordinance, the party claimed.

AAP also alleged that this ordinance effectively stripped the elected government of Delhi of its rightful powers.

The party is resolutely committed to championing the rights and legitimate concerns of the people of Delhi, and it would take the struggle to the streets to challenge the ‘black’ ordinance imposed by the Central government, it said.

“As part of a pre-announced programme, AAP workers and supporters demonstrated their opposition to the ordinance by burning copies of it at various locations across Delhi. In continuation of these efforts, from July 6 to July 13, copies of the ordinance will be symbolically burnt at every locality in Delhi,” the party said.

Dry spell: Telangana CM KCR orders stockpiling of water

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has ordered the officials concerned to initiate measures on a war footing to stockpile water in the reservoirs by lifting from the projects on Krishna and Godavari rivers to prevent drought conditions in the state.

With the state witnessing dry spell due to deficit rainfall, CM KCR on Sunday held a high level meeting with officials on rainfall, availability of water in the rivers like Pranahita, water storage in reservoirs and electricity demand. He wanted the officials to take action to prevent shortage of drinking water and irrigation needs in the state.

Senior officials of the respective departments explained the project wise details of water availability to CM KCR.

The Chief Minister advised the officials to give priority to the supply of drinking water and to continuously monitor water reserves in the reservoirs under the Godavari and Krishna. The Irrigation Department and Energy Departments have been asked to work in coordination and preserve every drop of water for future needs.

CM KCR said that water reaching through Pranahita should be lifted through Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla projects and fill the Mid Manair. From there, half of the water will be lifted to lower Manair Dam and the remaining half to the SRSP through the revived Flood Canal. This will ensure that the last ayacut of Kaleshwaram till Suryapet and the SRSP ayacut get irrigation water.

CM KCR ordered the agriculture department officials to prepare a contingency plan to supply seeds and fertilizers to the farmers who already sowed cotton and other crop seeds and were waiting to go for another round of sowing activity due to dry spell.

The officials have been asked to submit a minute to minute report every morning to the CMO. Based on the reports submitted by Irrigation, Agriculture, Energy and Panchayat Raj Departments regarding the distribution of drinking water and irrigation water, the CM’s office will give orders and alerts to the ministers and public representatives of the respective areas from time to time. The CM said that the CMO will resolve every issue by coordinating all wings.

“Now, the value of Kaleshwaram will be known in difficult times to everyone. It is the testing time for the Irrigation department. Irrigation, Agriculture and Energy wings have the responsibility to ensure adequate supply of drinking and irrigation water by lifting water from Pranahita and Godavari. It is a crucial time for all of us,” he said.

“It is not the past Telangana and we should not think like earlier. We built projects to address the water crisis. Abundant water is available for drinking and irrigation needs. We should prove our potentiality when the state encounters difficult situations,” he added.

Rumours over whereabouts of top Russian General Sergei Surovikin

Rumours over whereabouts of top Russian General Sergei Surovikin

London: General Sergei Surovikin, the commander of the Russian air force, has not been seen in public since overnight on Friday when he issued a video appeal to Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin to cease his rebellion, as per a media report.

Rumours about his whereabouts — and his potential role in the short-lived insurrection — have been swirling in recent days, CNN reported.

On Wednesday, the Russian-language version of the Moscow Times cited two anonymous defence sources as saying that Surovikin had been arrested in relation to the failed mutiny.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that he is unable to answer questions about the speculation around Surovikin, and referred journalists’ inquiries to the Russian defence ministry.

The video released last Friday has raised more questions than answers about Surovikin’s whereabouts and state of mind. He appears in the footage unshaven and with a halting delivery, apparently reading from a script.

A popular blogger going by the name Rybar noted on Wednesday that “Surovikin has not been seen since Saturday [and] it is not known for certain where ‘General Armageddon’ [a nickname Surovikin was given by the Russian press] is. There is a version that he is under interrogation”, CNN reported.

Russian journalist Alexev Venediktov — former editor of the now shuttered Echo Moscow radio station — also claimed on Wednesday that Surovikin had not been in contact with his family for three days.

Other Russian commentators have suggested the general is not in custody.

Meanwhile, former Russian Member of Parliament, Sergey Markov, said on Telegram that Surovikin had attended a meeting in Rostov on Thursday, although he did not say how he knew this, CNN reported.

“Surovikin appeared at a meeting in Rostov,” he said, adding, “As I wrote the above, the rumours about the arrest of Surovikin are dispersing the topic of rebellion in order to promote political instability in Russia.”

Attack on Bhim Army chief reflects poorly on UPs law-and-order situation: CPI

Yogi govt to present its largest-ever budget

New Delhi: The CPI slammed the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday over an attack on Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad, saying it reflects poorly on the state’s law-and-order situation.

Aazad, a Dalit leader, sustained a gunshot injury when unidentified assailants opened fire on his car in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoband on Wednesday, police said.

Aazad (36) had gone to attend a “terhavin” ritual at a supporter’s house in Saharanpur district’s Deoband, they said, adding that the assailants fired multiple shots at his sports utility vehicle (SUV) as he was leaving.

“Cowardly attack on @BhimArmyChief Chandra Shekhar reflects poorly on the law and order situation of Uttar Pradesh.

“Assaults, political targeting and even assassinations have become common in Yogi’s UP. BJP misrule and politics of hatred have turned Uttar Pradesh into Unruly Pradesh,” Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary D Raja said in a tweet.

Durga temple to be developed with funds worth Rs 195 cr says AP Minister

Amaravati: Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam, popularly known as Kanaka Durga temple, in Vijayawada will be developed at a cost of Rs 195 crore, said Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Endowments Minister Kottu Satyanarayana on Tuesday.

For the funds, Rs 70 crore would be spent by the state government while the remaining Rs 125 crore would be disbursed from the temple’s reserves, Satyanarayana said.

“Considering the rising numbers of devotees to Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Devasthanam day by day in Vijayawada, the Chief Minister has allocated these funds to create facilities,” the Minister said in a press release.

Already, Satyanarayana said works worth Rs 15 crore have been completed while the construction of prasadam potu and annadanam bhavan (dining hall) worth Rs 55 crore will be completed.

He said the temple authority has also executed some works to ensure that rocks and stones do not roll down on to pilgrims when they pay obeisance to the deity.

Further, the Minister said an additional Rs 125 crore would be earmarked to build a multi-level queue complex, a bridge to connect it, and annadanam bhavan along with other developmental works.

He said an expression of interest (EOI) has been called to build a mechanised multi-level car parking worth Rs 60 crore under build operate transfer (BOT) mode at one of the entrances.
